Other differences:

Micromolding

  • Might need draft angles to release component from tool.
  • Need to contend with parting lines, gate vestige and ejector pin marks.
  • Better for components requiring clarity (optical surfaces).

Micromachining

  • High variability from setup to setup. Machine tools are perishable which is the source of variability.
  • Vapor polishing is limited to specific materials. Plastics that respond well to vapor polishing: PC, Acrylic, PSU, PEI, ABS.
  • Draft angles and radii expensive. Chamfers are less expensive.
  • Better for internal threads
    (mold tooling expensive).
  • Better for undercuts
