Mikrotech Begins Offering LCP Micromachining - a new line of custom extruded Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP) rod diameters …
Kenosha, Wisconsin – Mikrotech a medical device contract micromanufacturer, announces today the addition of a new line of custom extruded Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP) rod diameters suitable for micromachining. The new line will increase the breadth of polymers Mikrotech can utilize for micromachining components and sub assemblies for medical devices used in minimally invasive surgery (MIS). LCP is an outstanding polymer choice for MIS devices due to its excellent flow characteristics, dimensional stability, chemical resistance and its high stiffness in thin wall sections. It also makes a good choice for insert micromolding and metal-to-plastic conversions.

During the prototype stage, the design of MIS devices can often have multiple design iterations before the final appearance and functionality of the product is complete. Micromachining provides designers the flexibility to perform design verification testing quickly with little or no tooling costs. However, finding suitable machine grade forms of LCP is difficult. As a result, designers have been forced to go directly to prototype or production mold tooling which often results in additional tooling costs and longer product development cycles. The new line of custom extruded LCP rod diameters will allow Mikrotech to provide a cost-effective prototyping solution that fully recognizes the distinct advantages of utilizing LCP.

Mikrotech offers best-in-class multi-axis CNC and Swiss screw micromachining for prototype and short run production. The technology enables designers to obtain precision high quality plastic components with features as small as .0008” (.020 mm) and take a solid model or CAD drawing to a finished product in three to four weeks. It can yield components which are burr free and obtain a surface finish of 16 µm or better.
